Here a list of resources about the STM. I will eventually post more internal stuff about the STM, please be on the look out!

I have to add the REM station codes and more! Please reach out if you want to help or have some interesting things to add.

OPUS Card

OPUS Cards are based on the Calypso system, conforming to ISO 14443 B standard. They are used by multiple transit agencies in Québec, notably the region gouverned by the ARTM, so, in other words, the STM. The system works on a ticketing basis: OPUS cards are charged via a public ticketing machine or, since 2024, using one's smartphone (Android or iOS, application Chrono).

To know the number of tickets remaining et a history of last travels, it is possible to use the Lecteur OPUS (Android) application. (If it becomes unavailable, I will upload it here) There exists also the ARTM-developed Chrono, but it doesn't allow one to view their last travels and requires internet access. On the other hoof, it allows one to top up their OPUS card.

As they are directly readable via NFC, the tickets must be stored on the card and are then not linked to any account. The ARTM plans to change this with the introduction of its Projet Concerto which includes a diversification of payment methods and the creation of a "mobility account" (by 2026) to facilitate the introduction of fully digitial tickets.

When will there be a "tap out" system implemented, which debits the user when exiting the metro station (for example)? I don't know, but it would be a good future development. Though, according the Projet Concerto, payment during tap-in will be possible with one's credit/debit card and some sort of "post-payment" will be put in place, both in 2026. So, maybe we might end up with a "tap out" system. Note that the REM's ticketing gates can be easily upgraded to add a "tap out" system.

For post-payment, they have cameras on the new validateurs de titres in the métro (since 2022) and the REM. These cameras are Zebra SE4750 / SE4757 modules for reading unidimentional and matrix codes (such as QR codes). See my post in the Agora MTL forum for more details and pictures.

External resources

Here is a list of web sites and other interesting resources about the STM. I divided this zone into three sections: official public transport agency websites, web forums where one can find others passionate about public transport, and personal (or not) websites that talk about the STM and public transport in general. Have fun!
